The Australian circus industry is proud of the high standards of animal care which can be seen in the numerous professional circuses on the road today.
We firmly believe animals can be provided a great quality of life on a well-run, modern circus environment and providing optimal care is of utmost importance to our circus community.
Australian circus animals are trained with rewards and repetition.
Trainers also utilise careful observation of an individual animal's preferences, person
ality quirks, and body language, in order to establish which animal is best suited toward learning a particular manoeuvre.
With enough patience, understanding and repetition over a period of time, animals can be taught a huge range of skills.
Specialised, custom designed travel quarters ensure the animals are transported in comfortable, clean, safe, well ventilated surroundings.
Distances between locations are planned to minimise travel duration and the animals are always the first priority when arriving at a new location.
Transportation becomes a part of the animals' normal routine and is usually greeted with enthusiasm and excitement.
The regular change of scenery, vegetation and scents are incredibly enriching to circus animals.
Mental stimulation is provided through training sessions and human interaction; circus keepers also commonly provide additional enrichment in the form of toys and treats.
It is also standard that Australian Circus animals are housed with the companionship of their own species and are able to express natural behaviour within their social groups.
Circus animals (both exotic species like lions and monkeys, and domestic species such as horses and dogs), also develop very strong bonds with their trainers/handlers, no different to household pets and their human families.
It is plain to see that the attention handlers give to their animals is a great source of enrichment.
It is standard routine that all Australian circus animals are housed in large modern enclosures with freedom to exercise and socialise with companion animals.
The living arrangements of circus animals are in public view 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and members of the public are always encouraged to come down to circuses and see the animal enclosures for themselves.
As is the case amongst all responsible animal carers, circus animals are provided with great attention to grooming, vaccinations, de worming, healthy diet, veterinary care when necessary, etc.
The welfare of all Australian Circus animals is protected by government regulation and regular inspection.
